Wishaw and District Housing Association / Dykehead Primary Eco-Art Project

Another successful wider role project was our Eco-Art Project with Dykehead Primary school in Shotts, completed in the Summer of 2007.  Our Easter Road development is located immediately adjacent to the school and it has, therefore, had a direct impact on the school's surrounding environment.

With such a huge change occurring around the school, the headmistress approached the Association to see if there was a practical way to involve the children in the new development.  After the success of our Coltness Wider Action Project, we felt that a similar project here could be an ideal opportunity to integrate the new development into the community while allowing the children to have a direct input into their environment.

The Association was delighted to have the chance to help the children understand what social housing is all about and, also, with the help of an artist, to involve them in personalising our development with hand made number tiles and mosaics and to help improve their school grounds with a unique mural and new signage.  Not only does this help to make a more friendly and welcoming environment for the future occupants of the houses but also provides a colourful legacy for all the community to enjoy.  The children had the satisaction of designing these items themselves and assisting in making them.

We had also hoped to be able to design and create a wildlife garden situated at the entrance of the development.  Unfortunately our funding application was not successful so the staff and committee have taken it upon themselves collecting plants and bulbs from their garden and we have started work in creating this natural habitat for native insects and birds.

We feel these kinds of projects have intrinsic value and they are an excellent way to strengthen and develop our community links.  If you know of any potential projects that would be of benefit to your community, please get in touch you never know - maybe we can help.
